Summary of Module

This module provides an introduction to Consumer Rights and a chronological analysis of the emergence of consumer protection and in particular a consideration of the area of sale of goods, including provisions relating to implied terms, the transfer of ownership, and the rights, duties and remedies of sellers and buyers.

Thereafter, the module is concerned with a consideration of the law relating to Consumer Protection and Consumer Credit.

  • Investigate, analyse and evaluate areas of consumer law.

  • Make effective use of library and electronic resources to acquire legal material.

  • Analyse practical case studies in terms of relevant legal principle, in order to reach practical conclusions.

  • Engage in critical discourse in relation to relevant legal issues.

Face-To-Face
Term used to describe the traditional classroom environment where the students and the lecturer meet synchronously in the same room for the whole provision.

Fully Online
Instruction that is solely delivered by web-based or internet-based technologies. This term is used to describe the previously used terms distance learning and e learning.

Blended
A mode of delivery of a module or a programme that involves online and face-to-face delivery of learning, teaching and assessment activities, student support and feedback. A programme may be considered “blended” if it includes a combination of face-to-face, online and blended modules. If an online programme has any compulsory face-to-face and campus elements it must be described as blended with clearly articulated delivery information to manage student expectations

Learning Outcomes: (maximum of 5 statements)

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:

L1. Evaluate the effectiveness of consumer protection rights pertaining to the sale of goods

L2. Understand the legal principles pertaining to the creation, operation and termination of the appropriate structures relating to insurance law

L3. Analyse and interpret the provisons of relevant legislation and case law pertaining to insurance law

L4. Utilise learning resources, including electronic resources, to acquire knowledge and understanding of the law

Learning and Teaching
The module is designed to facilitate engagement via weekly workshops to allow students to identify, critically assess and analyse areas of substantive and procedural consumer law. Students will be expected to engage with a variety of learning experiences in order to develop knowledge and understanding of consumer law in a realistic, contemporary context. The learning and teaching approach is inquiry based to encourage the development of theoretical knowledge and practical research skills.

Attendance Requirements

In line with the Academic Engagement and Attendance Procedure, Students are defined as academically engaged if they are regularly engaged with timetabled teaching sessions, course-related learning resources including those in the Library and on Moodle, and complete assessments and submit these on time.
