Summary of Module

The module introduces you to the role and purpose of accounting and finance functions within a business. Lectures, practical tutorials and VLE activities guide you through: the international financial environment in which a business operates; approaches to costing, budgeting and financial decision-making. You will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the management accounting functions within business.

Face-To-Face
Term used to describe the traditional classroom environment where the students and the lecturer meet synchronously in the same room for the whole provision.

Fully Online
Instruction that is solely delivered by web-based or internet-based technologies. This term is used to describe the previously used terms distance learning and e learning.

Blended
A mode of delivery of a module or a programme that involves online and face-to-face delivery of learning, teaching and assessment activities, student support and feedback. A programme may be considered “blended” if it includes a combination of face-to-face, online and blended modules. If an online programme has any compulsory face-to-face and campus elements it must be described as blended with clearly articulated delivery information to manage student expectations

Learning Outcomes: (maximum of 5 statements)

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:

L1. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of techniques used in costing and budgeting of products, services and business ventures.

L2. Apply marginal (variable) costing techniques as a tool for financial decision-making and break-even analysis.

Demonstrate and/or work with:
• Knowledge that is embedded in the main theories, concepts and principles of the finance function in terms of how it interacts with business operations and decisions.
• An awareness of the dynamic nature of knowledge and understanding of the finance function in particular in relation to the role and function of the management accountant in costing, budgeting and decision-making.

• In routine techniques and concepts common to the roles of management accountant and financial manager.

Use a wide range of routine skills and some advanced skills associated with a subject/discipline/sector, for example:
• Convey some simple and complex ideas in well-structured and coherent form.
• Use a range of forms of communication effectively in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
• Select and use standard ICT applications to process and obtain a variety of information and data
• Use a range of numerical and graphical skills in combination.
• Use numerical and graphical data to measure progress and achieve goals/targets.

Learning and Teaching
A variety of learning and teaching activities will be used in the delivery of the module, aligned to student assessment. The module adopts a whole class teaching approach offering a balance between discussion and active student participation in applying financial techniques within class activity time. A variety of teaching aids will be used in classroom sessions including: PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Web resources. Case study examples and VLE resources and activities offer ample opportunity for students to develop lifelong learning skills in terms of collaborations and teamwork, basic research skills, communication and information literacy, in line with the needs of a graduate of the future. Student engagement and participation will be supported through the module VLE site. Continuous formative feedback will be available via class and forum participation and VLE tests and quizzes. Learning will be supported by VLE: media files, web links, and other activities, offering summary and further exploration of key concepts.

Attendance Requirements

In line with the Academic Engagement and Attendance Procedure, Students are defined as academically engaged if they are regularly engaged with timetabled teaching sessions, course-related learning resources including those in the Library and on Moodle, and complete assessments and submit these on time.
