Summary of Module

This module introduces students to the dynamic and complex global sports arena and centres on the application of management to the sports business industry. It develops students’ business management knowledge and implementation skills. It applies a multi-disciplinary approach to a number of areas and contemporary issues in the sport business context.The module is constructed around three themes:

Insight into sport and leisure markets and industries: This theme adopts a critical understanding of the global sports economy. It provides analytical examination of the changing environment of the sport & leisure industries and explores the sport business landscape. It considers the strategic relevance of the political, economic, legal, cultural and global contexts of sports business. Consideration is given to exploring global sports consumers and their impact on effective sports marketing.

Fundamentals of sports business and operational management: This component centres on how empirical microeconomics feature within the sports management industry, drawing on examples to encourage better understanding of supply, demand and pricing decisions in the industry. Appropriate financial management techniques are examined. Students are alsexposed to philosophical assumptions that underpin sports management research.

Management behaviours in sporting organisations: This theme helps students make informed evidence-based decisions through meaningful operational management data analysis. It explores strategic thinking and the implementation of strategic decisions within sport organisations and considers appropriate tools for analysing strategy effectiveness. Managing service quality in various sports organisations is considered alongside a critical evaluation of the application of mainstream sports specific human resource management theory to sports organisations' practices.

Face-To-Face
Term used to describe the traditional classroom environment where the students and the lecturer meet synchronously in the same room for the whole provision.

Fully Online
Instruction that is solely delivered by web-based or internet-based technologies. This term is used to describe the previously used terms distance learning and e learning.

Blended
A mode of delivery of a module or a programme that involves online and face-to-face delivery of learning, teaching and assessment activities, student support and feedback. A programme may be considered “blended” if it includes a combination of face-to-face, online and blended modules. If an online programme has any compulsory face-to-face and campus elements it must be described as blended with clearly articulated delivery information to manage student expectations

Learning Outcomes: (maximum of 5 statements)

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:

L1. Identify and analyse ethical, legal and socio-cultural issues to sports management, and formulate responses for use in managerial decision-making and policy determinations in sport.

L2. Appraise critically contemporary management concepts, research and issues applied to sports businesses, organisations, enterprises and providers.

L3. Utilise a range of approaches to consider and evaluate the principles and practices of contemporary management within sports organisations and enterprises within relevant national and international contexts.

L4. Develop and apply critical thinking and abstract reasoning skills in analysing sports management issues and in managerial planning and decision-making.

SCQF Headings During completion of this module, there will be an opportunity to achieve core skills in:
Knowledge and Understanding (K and U) SCQF Level 9.

The module is fully aligned with institutional priorities around the development of graduate attributes and with the institutional policy on personal development planning. To support student understanding of employability, the development of employability capacities and competencies has been mapped against module assessment. The linking of employability explicitly to assessment provides the student with an explicit reference point and supports a more constructive engagement with employability. The competencies and capacities explicitly developed as part of this module can be identified against each assessment as follows:
• Providing opportunities for students to develop an awareness of sports business theories and concepts in relation to sport practice by producing written and visual presentations via tutorials and assessments in a professional context.

Developing competency and confidence in networking with professionals from the private sport industries, enhancing assertiveness and negotiation skills through individual and group work.

Supporting students to develop leadership, interpersonal communication and presentation skills in relation to commercial understanding of sport businesses, organisations and contemporary issues.

Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills SCQF Level 9.

Use a range of routine skills and some advanced and specialised skills
associated with sports business management, for example:
• Convey complex information to a range of audiences and for a range of purposes.
• Use a range of standard applications to process and obtain data.
• Use and evaluate numerical and graphical data to measure progress
and achieve goals/targets.

Exercise autonomy and initiative in some activities at a professional level.
