Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admission requirements of the University of the West of Scotland as specified in Chapter 2 of the University Regulatory Framework together with the following programme requirements:

Further desirable skills pre-application

It would be desirable that all direct entrant students to SCQF levels 8, 9 and 10 have skills in the following areas: numeracy, communications including report writing and presentations, and investigation techniques.


General Overview

The BSc (Hons) programme enables the students to study the main health, safety and environmental topics as they relate to workplace safety and environmental protection. This approach allows students in second year to gain an understanding of all the key topics such as the management of risk, safety technology, health and safety law, health and hygiene and the legislative framework in practice. The emphasis of the third year is on the management of health and safety within a working environment and includes professional skills, case studies and an opportunity to develop a health and safety management system.  The honours year will build on level 9 modules in safety, health and environment with the focus on health and environment.

The key academic aims of the programme are to:

1.  Develop critical problem based learning skills and transferable skills to prepare the student for employment.

2.  Enable the student to engage in lifelong learning, study and inquiry, and to appreciate the value of education to society.

3.  Assist the student to develop the skills required for both independent practice and team-working.

4.  Develop intellectual powers; their understanding, judgement and problem solving skills; their ability to communicate, see relationships and to perceive the related areas of safety management

5.  Stimulate an enquiring, analytical and creative approach to the use of the technology and so encourage independent judgement and critical awareness

The BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health meets all the criteria required by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Students may progress to the postgraduate / MSc in Waste and Resource Management.

Students will attend lectures and tutorials and extend their studies through group working, role play, presentations, seminars and independent learning with problem solving scenarios using case studies. Class discussion is encouraged and students will present work based topics to peers and supervisors. Candidates will be bound by the general assessment regulations of the University Regulatory Framework. An overview of the assessment details is provided in the student handbook and full details of the assessment criteria for each module is provided in the module descriptor and are identified against specific module learning outcomes. Methods vary across modules and include the following: 1/ Unseen examinations – students are required to answer, in most cases, three questions from five. All the questions are related to specific module learning outcomes. 2/ Class tests – These are used to ensure the students have obtained a broad knowledge of the subject area, in conjunction with course work. 3/ Coursework – All course work given to the students will be based on various workplace scenarios. 4/ Oral presentations – These will take the form of individuals presenting a topic from the module and groups presenting reports etc. 5/ Roleplay – Workbased scenarios are presented in class and the students are given specific roles to play.

For all of the above, students are expected to utilise workbased knowledge to achieve the learning outcomes of the modules. For all modules, a pass will normally be awarded to candidates achieving a mark of 40% or above. This mark will be an aggregate mark from the continuous assessment and/or coursework and/or examination components. In addition, candidates must achieve a minimum of 30% in all assessment components. Additional time is allocated for PDP and support skills. This programme has utilised the extra time in term 1. Support skills will be offered to all students on the programme and are timetabled to be delivered at the beginning of the term. All modules in this programme have their own sites on our VLE site, and students are encouraged to use the sites to keep up to date with the programme, the course and for discussions. This is especially important for students who fail to attend classes for any reason.


Graduate Attributes, Employability & Personal Development Planning

The programme has a strong practical base. The involvement of representatives from public and private sector agencies and companies ensures that students receive current information in health and safety management. Students will gain a wide range of skills and abilities in health, safety and environmental situations, systems planning and recommending appropriate solutions to problems. Written and oral communications are required throughout the programme.  Personal development planning is contained throughout the modules as actual industrial and business examples are referred to in all modules and guest speakers are involved to allow students to explore current industry and government needs.

In line with the Academic Engagement and Attendance Procedure, Students are defined as academically engaged if they are regularly engaged with timetabled teaching sessions, course-related learning resources including those in the Library and on Moodle, and complete assessments and submit these on time.

Criteria for Progression and Award

To progress to level 8, a total of 120 credits at SCQF level 7 must be achieved. Progression with credit deficit is subject to the provisions in regulation 3.13. The exit award, see regulation 1.21, is the Certificate in Higher Education in Science, the requirements for which are 120 credits at SCQF level 7 or above.

Criteria for Progression and Award

To progress to level 10, a total of 360 credits of which a minimum of 90 are at SCQF level 9 or above. Progression with deficit is not normally allowed from SCQF level 9 to level 10. The exit award, see regulation 1.21, from the programme is a Scottish Bachelors Degree, BSc (Ordinary) Occupational Safety and Health, the requirements for which are 360 credits, with at least 90 of these at SCQF 9 or above. An award with distinction will be made in accordance with University regulation 3.25.

Criteria for Award

The exit award, see regulation 1.21, from the programme is a Scottish Bachelors Degree with honours in Occupational Safety and Health, the requirements for which is 480 credits, of which a minimum of 90 are at SCQF 10 or above.


Regulations of Assessment

Candidates will be bound by the general assessment regulations of the University as specified in the University Regulatory Framework .

An overview of the assessment details is provided in the Student Handbook and the assessment criteria for each module is provided in the module descriptor which forms part of the module pack issued to students. For further details on assessment please refer to Chapter 3 of the Regulatory Framework.

To qualify for an award of the University, students must complete all the programme requirements and must meet the credit minima detailed in Chapter 1 of the Regulatory Framework.

Combined Studies

There may be instances where a student has been unsuccessful in meeting the award criteria for the named award and for other more generic named awards existing within the School. Provided that they have met the credit requirements in line with the SCQF credit minima (please see Regulation 1.21), they will be eligible for an exit award of CertHE / DipHE or BA / BSc in Combined Studies.

For students studying BA, BAcc, or BD awards the award will be BA Combined Studies.

For students studying BEng or BSc awards, the award will be BSc Combined Studies.
