This module critically explores the area of strategic management in organisations. The module introduces the core concepts of strategic management so that students are able to fully understand the process and content of strategic management. The topics covered range across a number of areas -the role and tasks of top management, the nature of strategic management, strategic change and decisions. Business policy, organizational analysis, competitive position, SWOT analysis, value chain analysis, comparative analysis, resource led strategy examining the role of people, technology and information management on resource based strategy. Social and political influence, organizational objectives, power. Strategic choice, generic strategies, strategy development, techniques and approaches to strategy evaluation. Strategy implementation, planning and resource allocation. Role of organization structure, people, systems and culture. Managing strategic change.The module will enable students to analyse the business environment and suggest how organisations might manage the strategy process. This includes structure, processes, systems and culture needed to be successful. Students will develop an appreciation of the global challenges facing organisations. Students will develop knowledge of the strategic options open to organisations and this will include strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions.
