Summary of Module

This module critically explores the area of organisational strategy and strategy development for contemporary organisations. The module introduces the core concepts of strategic management with critical exploration of the internal organisational and external market factors which influence strategic decision making in organisations.

The topics covered range across a number of areas -the role and tasks of top management, the nature of strategic management, strategic change and decisions. Students will learn to evaluate and apply a range of strategic management tools and models in order to inform strategic decision making within organisations.  The role of specific business functions, including marketing, operations, logistics and human resource management, in relation to strategy development will be evaluated.

The module will enable students to analyse the business environment and suggest how organisations might manage the strategy process. This includes structure, processes, systems culture, segmentation, targeting, pricing and communications needed to create and maintain competitive advantage. Students will develop an appreciation of the global challenges facing organisations and the role and impact of technological developments on contemporary organisational strategy.  Students will develop knowledge of the strategic options open to organisations and a critical understanding of environmental, competitive and internal issues and will appreciate the need to manage strategic change.
