Summary of Module

Many different products and services are consumed each day, but how to they reach the end customer? This is the test faced by the logistics function within the organisation. Furthermore we must also consider the associated cost against calls for efficiencies as well as the processes and procedures which ensure effective production and delivery of those products and services. Add to this the increasing global awareness of related environmental issues and responsibilities and the challenge for the logistics function is clear.

This module introduces students to the key business concepts within Logistics, through a framework within which they can critically analyse the performance of these functions from a sustainable business viewpoint; i.e. efficacy, efficiency and effectiveness.


  • Define logistics and Logistics management

  • Identify the core concepts of the Last Mile.

  • Understand the relevance of Logistics Management within Global Supply Chain Strategy

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the current and future Logistics challenges within sustainability and the wider operating environment.

Instruction that is solely delivered by web-based or internet-based technologies. This term is used to describe the previously used terms distance learning and e learning.

Learning and Teaching
The module will use, for the most part, a flipped classroom approach. Using realistic business cases, you will identify the associated functions products and processes within a business and will demonstrate the influence that logistics management can have on organisational success. You will be required to prepare in advance for each session by reading the relevant chapters or key texts and/or recommended reading materials set by the module coordinator.
Logistics Management scenarios will draw on the key topics of the module and you will work both independently and in groups to develop a deep and critical understanding and analysis of the subject area.
