Summary of Module

The module examines contemporary policing practice and theory in both global and local community contexts. Key themes explored in the module include police culture, police leadership, the police-media relationship, and the pluralisation of policing.

Face-To-Face
Term used to describe the traditional classroom environment where the students and the lecturer meet synchronously in the same room for the whole provision.

Blended

A programme may be considered “blended” if it includes a combination of face-to-face, online and blended modules. On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:

L1. Demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of current and emerging issues in policing in the contemporary world

L2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of key concepts and theories in contemporary policing

L3. Demonstrate an ability to engage with scholarly research to explain contemporary policing practices in local and global contexts

L4. Effectively communicate complex ideas about policing using appropriate academic approaches and conventions.

Employability Skills and Personal Development Planning (PDP) Skills
SCQF Headings During completion of this module, there will be an opportunity to achieve core skills in:
Knowledge and Understanding (K and U) SCQF Level 11.

Extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of policing theories, principles and concepts, informed by research at the forefront of present knowledge.

Practice: Applied Knowledge and Understanding SCQF Level 11.

Students will apply comparative analysis to critically explain and evaluate new developments in policing practice. This will enable students to understand the implementation of policies in the field of policing and law enforcement in the future.

Generic Cognitive skills SCQF Level 11.

Students will apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to complex issues at the forefront of the study of policing and law enforcement.

Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills SCQF Level 11.

Students will develop their oral communication skills by delivering a presentation and interacting with peers and staff during seminars. Students will develop their ICT skills through the use of online research and the use of appropriate software packages.

Autonomy, Accountability and Working with others SCQF Level 11.

Students will exercise substantial autonomy and initiative in carrying out learning activities.

Students will take responsibility for own work and contribute to the collective learning activities of the group.
