Summary of Module

The emergence of extended realities (XR) technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) , is opening new job opportunities for games developers in areas that are traditionally not related with computer games, such as manufacturing, architecture, engineering, film making, concerts, exhibitions, etc. As such individuals that are able to implement a design for an immersive experience are currently highly valuable in the job market.

This module will teach students how to implement the design of immersive XR experiences using commercial game engines.After this module students will be able to:

- Setup a XR development pipeline

- Implement diegetic interactions and 3D user interfaces

- Optimise the scene for XR hardware

- Generate High-Fidelity implementations of a given design for an immersive experience




  • Introduce students to how to implement immersive experiences through emerging immersive technologies that are influencing computer games development, visualization of data, cultural and social experiences, and communication of information in general

  • Give students experience in how to transform a design for an immersive experience into working software

  • Give students experience in implementing diegetic 3D interfaces and interactions, and optimize software to run on XR hardware

Learning and Teaching
This module is delivered by means of lectures and implementation activities providing a vehicle for deepening the student’s exposure to the issues related to implementing immersive experiences for computer games, industry, cultural experiences, visualisation, and communication.

The module aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to confidently translate design and prototypes of immersive experiences into working software in the context of computer games, and the wider context of industry, education, cultural experiences, visualisation, and communication.

Students in the module will experience the full process of generating software given a design and a set of prototypes and optimize software for XR hardware.

The approach attempts to mimic industry project boundaries and practices aiming to develop self reliance, enhance motivation and commitment by setting project oriented tasks in areas relevant to the Module aims. The module is designed to be student-centered and flexible to allow students to develop the coursework in accordance with their diverse needs.

The lectures introduce and discuss the implementation processes and optimization and will be delivered in hybrid modality.

Guest talks from industry and/or researchers will augment the module and expose students to industry practices and/or latest research advances in the field.

The practical work is conducted in a manner similar to a real-life working environment and utilise a group project and a industry problem based learning approach with formative assessment employed to give feedback to students with their software implementation and to develop problem solving skills relevant to the summative coursework assessments.

The assessment will require students to generate software that implements a given immersive experience (AR or VR) design.

The learning activities involve the production of graphical computer applications and sensors hardware assembly for which support or alternative practical work can be provided for students with additional support needs.
